Jean Paul Gaultier x Melissa

Fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier has become the latest famous name to create a plastic shoe for Brazilian brand Melissa. The Parisian designer has collaborated with Melissa to create a 100% recyclable 10cm plastic stiletto called JEAN PAUL GAULTIER X MELISSA. The shoe will be available in a range of colours, including black, caramel, beige, lime and tangerine. It is available to buy this month for around £160!

Hetty Rose

Hetty Rose is a passionate bespoke footwear company with a clear brand philosophy; to make an environmental statement in an aesthetically pleasing way. Henrietta Rose Samuels, a graduate from the London College of Fashion, has created a collection based on a theory of re-using and re-working vintage materials in a creative and sustainable way, hand making gorgeous, feminine shoes to fit. These materials are primarily vintage Japanese kimono fabrics and are made in the UK. The designs are simple, yet provocative, designed to make the foot appear more attractive. The collaboration of colours, materials, service and directional design result in unique, wearable footwear.

Shoe of the Week - Terra Plana's Rita

I love these pink platforms from Terra Plana called Rita. They are lightweight and flexible, which is unheard of in a ladies' high heel shoe. This beautiful design comes in three colours and is made from Eco PU (black, white) or fabric made from recycled bottles (pink). And what is even more exciting, is that with a memory foam lining, this shoe is the ultimate in high heel comfort. Rita is part of the Terra Plana Non-Leather range.

Elisalex Grunfeld de Castro is Head Designer of Nina Dolcetti. She graduated from the London College of Fashion in 2005 before launching this high-end, luxury, upcycled footwear range at Estethica at London Fashion Week in September 2008. As stated on the Nina Dolcetti website, 'Nina' is her family nickname, and 'Dolcetti' her grandmother's maiden name, and together means 'little sweets' which is "the perfect metaphor for the pleasure, form and joy that shoes in a modern woman's wardrobe signify. "

Handmade in London,Nina Dolcetti shoes are made of off-cuts and unwanted pre-consumer waste. The collection has also introduced a range of ethically sourced vegetable tanned leathers. Also the heels and wedges are created from sustainably sourced cork and wood with the soles comprise largely of recycled leather.

Nina Dolcetti shoes are so beautiful, both in their design and their ethics.

Kitty Cooper

Kitty Cooper designs beautiful English original shoes, ethically manufactured in London. At Kitty's Boutique, you'll find delightful decadent shoes ranging from platforms trimmed with 1930s sack cotton or courts made from outrageously vivid 1960s curtains. Her mission is to provide a glamorous alternative to traditional 'eco-styled' footwear. The brand's motto is 'Beauty and Ethical shouldn't be a contradiction'. So true!
Kitty Cooper is a first class Cordwainer's graduate from the London College of Fashion and has had great experience of dealing with vintage fabric from working on Portobello Road. What inspired Kitty is how, in past eras, beautiful things were cared for and people's attitude was to 'make-do-and-mend' their treasured pieces, unlike the throw-away culture of today.

Kitty Cooper shoes are hand made by a family business in East London and most components are sourced and made within the UK. All of the fabrics, ribbons and trims are vintage materials ranging from the 1920s to the 1970s. Plus, their leather shoes are tanned organically!

Not to mention, their packaging is made from 100% post-consumer recycled, non-bleached paper, and a their shoe bags are organic, fairtrade, non-GM cotton.

Prices start at £245, but considering the workmanship that has gone into each pair, her shoes are competitively priced. For long term wardrobe investment, you can’t beat these shoes for quality and style.

Plastic and Fantastic

I bet most of you fashionistas have seen these Vivienne Westwood and Melissa Lady Dragon shoes in Oxford Street's Topshop or Selfridges, right? However, I doubt most of you know that these fashion must-haves are made from recycled plastic? Who knew ?! These plastic shoes are made from Melissa's signatory plastic MELFLEX which is a patented, hypo-allergenic, recyclable and extremely flexible PVC. This Brazilian-based company recycles 99.9% of factory water and waste, and they also go the distance by recycling overstock styles into next season’s collection. Not to mention the fact, they pay their 30,000 employees fair wage and maintain partnerships with numerous local non-profit organisations. Melissa shoes are made as one single molded piece, which creates a recognisable and intriguing aesthetic. The plastic is soft and changes shape to mold to your foot as you wear the shoes.

For me, the comfort and good design of these fantastic plastics, is complimented by their clear conscience of low environmental impact, which makes them even more BEAUTIFUL.
